History Navy Shipping Slave Trade Slavery Abolition Indian Ocean Bourbon

Chapter five of the fourth volume of this French illustrated history of shipping, covers the period 1815-30 and includes a summary of the transatlantic slave trade, "this commerce of shame and blood" (227) the international campaigns to abolish it, and the case of the Amistad. It also refers to the slave colonies including Bourbon in the Indian Ocean, describing attempts to silence news of the 1830 revolution there, and to ban slaves from singing the revolutionary hymn "La Parisienne". This short summary calls for the final abolition of slavery in the French colonies, with "these sublime words which resounded throughout Europe: Perish the colonies rather than a principle!" (239).

Volume four, 224-39. Includes the reproduction of a print entitled 'Négrier poursuivi, jetant ses nègres à la mer' (Pursued slave ship, throwing its slaves into the sea).
