Observations Report Broglie Slavery Constitution French Colonies Liberty Emancipation

Alexander and Scoble published in French their observations on the Duke of Broglie's 1843 report to the French Parliament on colonial slavery, entitling their remarks: Immediate and Absolute Emancipation, or Slavery. Addressed to a French audience, the pamphlet points out the fundamental contradiction between man's right to personal liberty and the system of colonial slavery. Emancipation is described as basic justice which had been sacrificed to the greed of the planters, but which could not be denied for long without serious damage to French national honour (23-24).
