Programme Prize Essay Abolition Slave Trade French Society Christian Morality
This pamphlet, produced by the French Society of Christian Morality, proposes an essay competition on the subject of France's abolition of the slave trade. The subject of the competition is described as being "worthy of writers dedicated to the advancement of religious and philanthropic principles" (1). Entrants are asked to address questions such as: how can complete abolition of the slave trade between the coast of Africa and the French colonies be achieved? Why has abolition met with little public success in France? How can the existing laws be improved, and why have they not been properly implemented?
The Society also ran an essay competition in 1827 on the subject of the gradual abolition of slavery.
