Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - CNRS - France

 The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique is a government-funded research organization under the administrative authority of France's Ministry of Research, involved in all scientific fields. More than 1000 CNRS research units are spread throughout France, and employ a large body of permanent researchers, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff.

CNRS is involved in EURESCL as the responsible institution of  the "Centre International de Recherches sur les Esclavages" (CIRESC-GDRI).

The main objectives of the CIRESC-GDRI are to develop and spread studies on Trade and Slavery and their cultural social and political outputs over the centuries and all over the world.  These studies are multidisciplinary and comparative in order to split the different cultural areas and to point out the national scientific influences and decisions.

Its main activities are:

• the running of joint research programs, and conferences;
• a reflection on teaching Trade and Slavery at school and the creation of pedagogic tools;
• information to researchers, teachers, stakeholders and a wider public via a website.

University of Hull – UHULL – UK

WISE is an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to the pursuit of world-class research in the areas of slavery, emancipation, human rights, and social justice, historically and in the contemporary world. It seeks to provide a forum for academic discourse and interaction, to advance academic knowledge and public understanding of historical and contemporary debates, to inform policy change and the campaigns of activists, and to work with others to generate knowledge transfer.

Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto – FLUP – Portugal

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP) is a higher education institution, dedicated to teaching and research in the areas of the Human and Social Sciences, to cultural creation and the scientific, social and economic development of the country. The FLUP hosts the Centro de Estudos Africanos da Universidade do Porto (CEAUP) that was founded in November 1997, as an R & D Unit financed by the Portuguese FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). The CEAUP is a multi-disciplinary research Unit which aims to apply the scientific potential of modern research on Africa.

The CEAUP has been developing research on slave trade history, slave societies and forced labour in colonial Africa, since the last seven years. The display of the results of this research are:

• Several publishings (numbers of AFRICANA STUDIA; volumes of “Trabalho Forçado Africano”);
• organisation of a yearly Conference on this topic;
• electronic database on its website.

Université Cheikh Anta Diop – UCAD – Senegal

University of Dakar was created on February, 14th 1957 thanks the influence of the High Schools in Bordeaux.  First independent schools, all the Faculties have been joined to create the University of Dakar.

On March, 30th 1987 the University became Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar. This University is the oldest and biggest higher education structure in Senegal. Apart from the administrative facilities, the University is made up of 25 entities of higher education and research:

York University is representing the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African People. TheTubman Institute is a recognized research centre at York University that specializes in the history of the migrations, under slavery and after, of African peoples to different parts of the world. It is also a digitalized research facility with a digitized archival repository. The Institute trains students in the use of digital technologies.

The Tubman Institute is involved in the preservation of materials, the training of graduate students, the hosting of conferences and workshops and the production of research and research publications.

The Tubman Institute insures the scientific opening towards the north-American universities (canadian and American). It is in the centre of a network gathering the best experts on the questions of slavery, slave trade and its legacies in contemporary societies. It will facilitate the distribution of the results of research for the program EURESCL; and will allow the mutual exchange of students and researchers, and the participation in joint publications.

Danish National Archives – DNA - Denmark

The Danish National Archives is a research institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture. Twelve members of staff are Senior Researchers, i.e. positions parallel to university (associate) professors, which means that they carry our research to the highest international level. Besides its scholarly obligations, the National Archives is responsible for the same kind of tasks as other national archives.

The Danish National Archives possesses the highest expertise with regard to archival matters and research into primary sources.

Casa de Velazquez – CVZ - Spain

The Casa de Velasquez belongs to the network of the French High Schools abroad. It is placed under the supervision of the Ministry for the Higher education and Research.

Its role is to develop the creative activities and research relating to arts, languages, literatures and ages of Spain and Iberian world, of contributing to the training of teacher-researchers, artists, and of taking part in the development of the artistic exchanges and scientists between France and Iberian countries.

Within the “Ecole de Hautes Etudes Hispaniques” (Science section) it generally accommodates 18 researchers (archaeologists, historians, geographers, arts persons, linguists, sociologists, economists). In parallel, it receives, in its artistic Section, 13 artists (painters, sculptors, engravers, architects, type-setters, scenario writers, photographers).

Université d’État d’Haïti – UEH - Haïti

The State University of Haiti (UEH) is located in Port-au-Prince, capital of the country and the centre of the intellectual and political life of the nation. Create in 1920, the UEH was reorganized in 1960 and, according to the new constitution of 1986, is an autonomous institution.
